This is session 1 of 6, “Joel's ‘Before the Day of the Lord” delivered by Dr. Alan Kurschner from the conference, The Celestial Disturbances.
Joel 2, Celestial Disturbances, and the Day of the Lord
What does Joel 2 teach about the timing of the Day of the Lord, the rapture, and the great tribulation? In this opening session, Alan Kurschner begins a Bible prophecy conference by focusing on one of the most important prophetic markers in Scripture: the celestial disturbance event described in Joel 2:30–31. The passage says that the sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and awesome Day of the Lord comes. That single word—before—has massive implications for understanding end-times chronology.
Why Joel 2 Matters for Bible Prophecy
This video explains why Joel’s prophecy is not a minor detail, but a key interpretive passage for understanding the relationship between the Antichrist’s great tribulation, the rapture of the church, and the wrath of God. Kurschner argues that the celestial signs function as a prophetic signal that the Day of the Lord is about to begin. These heavenly disturbances are not described as happening during or after the Day of the Lord, but before it.
The Prewrath View of the Rapture Explained
From a prewrath perspective, this distinction is crucial. The church is not promised exemption from the Antichrist’s persecution, but believers are promised deliverance from the wrath of God. This session helps clarify the difference between the great tribulation, which targets believers and Israel, and the Day of the Lord’s wrath, which targets the wicked.
Following the Celestial Disturbances
Kurschner encourages students of Bible prophecy to “follow the celestial disturbances” throughout Scripture. Beginning with Joel, the conference traces this prophetic theme through Matthew 24, Luke 21, Acts 2, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Revelation, and other major biblical passages. The goal is to interpret Scripture naturally, comparing clear passages with related passages instead of forcing end-times theology through obscure or allegorical interpretations.
What You Can Expect in This Teaching
In this session, you will learn why Matthew 24:25—“I have told you ahead of time”—is a serious warning from Jesus, not a speculative side issue. You will also see how Joel’s prophecy gives a clear temporal marker that helps establish the order of end-time events. Kurschner contrasts the prewrath view with pre-tribulation and post-tribulation interpretations, arguing that the prewrath position offers the most natural reading of the biblical evidence.
Key Topics Covered
This teaching covers Joel 2:30–31, the Day of the Lord, celestial signs, the sun turning dark, the moon turning to blood, the Antichrist, the abomination of desolation, Daniel’s seventieth week, the great tribulation, God’s wrath, the rapture, and why believers must take Jesus’ end-time warnings seriously.
Watch This If You Want a Biblical Framework for the End Times
If you are studying Bible prophecy, the prewrath rapture, Matthew 24, the Day of the Lord, or the timing of the second coming of Christ, this session will help you understand why Joel’s prophecy is foundational. Rather than sensationalism, this teaching calls Christians back to careful biblical interpretation, spiritual readiness, and confidence in the warnings Jesus gave ahead of time.
